THE SAME GOD

God sent His Spirit of Truth to guide and protect us as we fulfill His divine purpose in the world. 

The same God who created the heavens and the earth sent His Holy Spirit to guide and protect us as we fulfill His divine purpose in the word.

Pentecost Sunday celebrates the gift of the Holy Spirit that descended upon the apostles as they gathered in Jerusalem following Christ’s Ascension into Heaven. 

Just as Jesus promised, He sent the Holy Spirit to strengthen, protect, and guide His followers as they began the work of spreading His Word throughout the world.

Pentecost is celebrated exactly 50 days after Christ’s resurrection. “It’s the moment when the fearful followers of Jesus were strengthened to proclaim the gospel boldly to the world,” from Guide to Pentecost 2026. 

The beauty of Pentecost is the transformation that took place in that room. Before that moment, the apostles were afraid. After receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit, they stood boldly, without fear, proclaiming the crucified and risen Christ.

Spiritual Transformation 

Acts 2 describes Pentecost and what follows. As the Holy Spirit descended, a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting (verse 2).

The apostles surrendered to the calling. 

They began speaking in tongues. In every tongue, and a bewildered crowd began to gather, because each one heard their own language being spoken (verse 6).

The crowd was confused. Are these men drunk? How is it that we can understand their words?

The apostles were unified in the calling. Their voices rose as one. In every tongue.

Peter addresses the crowd, telling them what has happened (verses 14-37) and what they’re called to do, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit,” (verse 38).

About three thousand people are baptized that day (verse 41).

The apostles answered, proclaimed, and baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

The gifts of the Holy Spirit are given by God so that we can live and serve as disciples of Christ in a world that resists us. 

The Gifts of the Spirit

In 1 Corinthians 12:4-6, Paul tells the church at Corinth that there are different spiritual gifts but that “the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.”

The same Spirit.

The same Lord.

And the same God.

The Holy Trinity is at work in the world today, just as it has been since the beginning of time. 

As believers, we’re the recipients of the gifts of the Spirit, just as we’re recipients of salvation through Christ, and the blessings of the one true God. 

Our mandate in Christ is to use the spiritual gifts and blessings we receive to share the Gospels and the truth of salvation in accordance with God’s Word and for the good of the church.

We’re not alone in our task. God sent the Holy Spirit to guide, sanctify, strengthen, and unite us in our holy mission.

Different gifts, but the same Spirit.

Every believer is given unique spiritual gifts by the Holy Spirit. Some receive the gift of teaching, others healing, and still others wisdom. Each gift carries with it a divine purpose and a calling.

First, to trust and surrender.

Then, to unite and serve.

And finally, to proclaim and baptize.

Different service, but the same Lord.

Though we’re each called to serve in different ways, our calling comes from Christ. As He instructed His followers to “go and make disciples of all nations,” we’re also instructed (Mathew 28:19-20). 

We serve under the leadership and authority of Christ; thus, no spiritual gift or specific job is more or less important. 

Our goal isn’t to draw attention to ourselves, but to be a unified body using our gifts and talents to honor and serve Christ.

Different kinds of work, but the same God.

God is active, alive, and directly at work through every single believer.

Every gift is essential and comes from the same God. Thus, no Christian can boast about their talent, nor feel insignificant. 

No one is left out.

And no one’s gift is superior to another’s. 

We possess different energies and talents, but the ultimate power and effectiveness is God’s.

Back to the room.

Jesus had ascended to Heaven. The apostles gathered as He’d instructed, where they waited, uncertain and fearful.

Then, the Holy Spirit descended and filled the room. The apostles emerge transformed, filled with energy, boldness, and certainty.

Their ministry begins immediately.

They trust and surrender.

Unite and serve. 

Proclaim and baptize.

Pentecost reminds us that the Christian life cannot be lived by human effort alone. We need grace. We need courage. And we need the Holy Spirit to renew our hearts and purify our desires.

The same God who created the heavens and the earth sent His own Son to be sacrificed for our salvation. The same Christ, who hung on the cross for our transgressions and rose to life for our redemption, calls us to serve. And the same Spirit that descended upon the faithful in that room calls us to faithfulness.

May we trust and surrender.

Unite and serve as one body.

And boldly and courageously proclaim the good news in Christ.

THE SAME GOD

The same God who created,

the heavens and the earth,

gives us LIFE and breath,

to do His HOLY work.

The same God who parted,

the relentless, rising sea,

delivers us from evil,

and fills us with His PEACE.

The same God who HEALS the sick,

makes the blind to see again,

wraps us in the MERCY,

That leads us back to Him.

The same God who gave us,

the gift of His own Son,

also sent His SPIRIT,

to ensure His WILL be done.

The same God who offers,

the FORGIVENESS that we seek,

STRENGTHENS and SUSTAINS us,

when we are lost and weak.

The same God who existed,

before time had begun,

SHELTERS us beneath His wings,

and CALMS the rising storm.

The same God who breathed His LIFE,

into each and every soul,

grants the COURAGE that we need,

to PROCLAIM His HOLY WORD.

The same God who made us,

in His own image makes a WAY,

through every daunting wilderness,

We will ever face.

The same God who calls us,

to SURRENDER and to SERVE,

is the same GOD who holds us,

in the CRADLE of His WORD.
