John 17:14 is a verse of identity filled with hope. We don’t belong to the world. We belong to God.
God’s love for us transcends the world. How do we know this? We know it because Jesus lived. We know it because Christ became flesh, dwelt among us, lived as one of us, and died for us. As believers, we are redeemed through Christ. That is our new identity, that we no longer belong to the world; we belong to Him.
“I passed Your word on to them, and the world hated them, because they belong to the world no more than I belong to the world,” John 17:14.
God of God yet Man of man.
Jesus came as man, born of woman, God of God, yet Man of man. Born into a sinful race for the sole purpose of securing our salvation.
Though sinless, Christ became sin to free us from the bondage of sin.
If that doesn’t stop you in your tracks, it should.
God’s love for you is so great, so unconditional, so fathomless, that He gave His own Son to become the propitiation for your sins. And for mine.
Propitiation comes from the Latin verb “propitiare,” which means “to appease.”
“In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins,” 1 John 4:10.

Jesus expiated our guilt.
Expiate is from the Latin form of “expiat,” which means to “appease by sacrifice.”
Our sin required a sacrifice that could satisfy the demands of the penalty. Since the penalty was death, only the shedding of blood could atone for our sin.
Christ’s sacrificial death is that payment.
The blood of Jesus expiated our guilt, covered our sins, and redeemed us from eternal death.
Salvation doesn’t end, because God’s love for us doesn’t end.
We belong to a loving God, created in His image and set above all the creatures of the earth.
That is our identity.
It’s also our calling and our purpose.
We’re baptized in living water, blessed with the Holy Spirit, and born into new life the moment we believe.
God sees beyond our failures and loves us unconditionally.
He guides us with gentleness and grace into His sacred word and into the fullness of our identity in Christ.
He covers us with mercy and kindness and shelters us from a world that struggles to remain in control.
God asks us to trust in Him. To relinquish all we are, surrendering ourselves fully to all that He is.
We’re marked with God’s Word.
God knew the world would turn away. He marked us with His word for this reason.
Every word Jesus spoke came from the Father. Every miracle, every sacrifice, and every instruction came from God to the world through Christ.
And the world turned away.
That’s what the world does. It seeks to control, to gain, and to diminish. The world cannot relinquish because it exists only to serve itself.
The world crucified the sinless Son of God rather than accepting the truth He carried or the light He offered.
“If the world hates you, remember that it hated Me first,” John 15:18.

Our identity in Christ makes us enemies of the world.
Our identity in Christ marks us as enemies of the world. That’s why Jesus told us to be on guard and to protect and feed the Church.
“Be on your guard for yourselves and for all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you the guardians, to feed the Church of God which He bought with the blood of His own Son,” Acts 20:28.
Christ, who Himself suffered in the world, knew His faithful would suffer also. Just like it rejected Him, the world, its processes and powers, would also reject His chosen.
We should not be surprised when the world turns away. Jesus asks us to live in that place of risk anyway, for Him. We’re called to remain in the light, though we live in a dark world.
We’re called to shine Christ’s light into that darkness. To help those trapped in darkness find their way to Him. That is the mandate of our identity in Christ.
To remain vigilant, steadfast in faith, and courageous, resting in the assurance that Jesus is our advocate at the Father’s side, asking that we be kept safe from the evil one.
“In the world you will have tribulation; but have courage; I have conquered the world,” John 16:33.
My Prayer
LORD, You came to bring light and truth into a dark world. You carried the burden of all sin to the cross, though You are sinless. Your death and resurrection created a new identity for all who believe in You. We do not belong to the world. We belong to You. Give us courage, Lord, to stand firm in that identity. To move with purpose and vigilance as we fulfill the mandate You gave us, trusting that You are with us and that Your strength is sufficient. Help us to honor your sacrifice by living as Your chosen people. With hearts that remain loving when faced with hatred, faith that stands firm in the face of persecution, and spirits that remain steadfast through every storm. Amen.

WE DON’T BELONG TO THE WORLD
With the blood of His own SON,
God clothes us in GRACE.
Returning us to the fullness,
of LIFE in His NAME.
The world answered with hatred,
failing to comprehend,
that He was the ONE sent,
to release us from sin.
To FREE us from the bondage,
and the darkness that came,
when we turned from His MERCY,
for our own selfish gain.
He stood in the gap,
between LIFE and DEATH,
surrendered His own life,
and very last breath,
to grant us FORGIVENESS,
We did not deserve,
fulfilling His PURPOSE,
OVERCOMING the world.
And the world could not fathom,
the GIFT He had given,
that the grave that stood empty,
meant that He had RISEN.
That God’s plan for SALVATION,
was fulfilled on the CROSS,
by a SAVIOR without sin,
Who paid the full cost.
With the blood of His own Son,
God opened the WAY,
to the GATES of His KINGDOM.
and the THRONE of His GRACE.
AMEN
