HE MARKED US AS WORTHY

When we feel unworthy of God’s grace, it’s not because His grace is insufficient. It’s because we’re still holding on to things already forgiven.

I’ve struggled with that. With feeling unworthy, because the weight of sin is heavy. As heavy as the cross Jesus carried. But He carried it for a reason. He carried it because He marked us as worthy.

Forgiveness has a name.

That name is Jesus. In His name, we’re granted freedom from our former selves and brought into the fullness of new life.

He who is without sin.

When the woman was brought before Him to be stoned for adultery, Jesus responded with grace, “He who is without sin, let him cast the first stone.”

The crowd came armed with the law to test Jesus. He exposed their hypocrisy. They came to judge, but instead, received judgment.

Under the scrutiny of that one question, they could not stand. Every hand that held a stone opened. Every stone fell.

Then, neither do I condemn you.

The crowd left. The woman lay at Jesus’s feet.

“Where are they? Has no one condemned you?”

Jesus didn’t leave her there. Instead, the only one who was without sin forgave her. With forgiveness wrapped in grace. “Then neither do I condemn you.”

Then He went further. To the part we often overlook. “Go, and sin no more.”

The part that holds us accountable for our worthiness.

Our worthiness isn’t measured by the sins we’ve already committed. It’s measured by how we live after we’ve received His grace

The price has been paid.

Jesus didn’t leave us either. He paid the price for us. His sacrifice says, “You’re worthy. I did this for you.” His resurrection says, “I love you. I conquered death for you.”

For you know that the price of your ransom from the futile way of life handed down from your ancestors was paid, not in anything perishable like silver or gold, but in precious blood as of a blameless and spotless lamb, Christ, 1 Peter 1:18-19.

Our task isn’t to question our worthiness. That question has already been answered. Our task is to live lives that are worthy.

MARKED AS WORTHY

LORD, You were without sin,

and yet You carried mine.

Beneath a heavy CROSS,

up a hill You chose to climb.

Not because I’m perfect,

but because You are.

You took my sins upon You,

and with MERCY cast them far.

You marked me as WORTHY.

With GRACE, You set me free.

With precious blood, You paid the price,

required to RANSOM me.

“You are more than worthy,

I did all this for You.

I conquered death so you might live,

to grant You LIFE anew.

Go and sin no more.

Your debt has now been paid.

I’ve freed you from the bondage

and darkness of the grave.

Live now to be WORTHY

of the SACRIFICE I offer.

FORGIVENESS granted in my Name,

is sanctioned by no other.

LORD, You were without sin,

and yet You carried mine.

Beneath a heavy CROSS,

up a hill You chose to climb.

Help me to be WORTHY.

To live each day for You.

To HONOR Your DEVOTION,

with all I say and do.

AMEN

I’m JN Fenwick

Wife, mom, but more importantly, a recovering alcoholic with a grateful heart. For years, I struggled, not just with alcohol, but with an eating disorder and the burdens of guilt and shame. On March 22, 2018, I surrendered my life to Christ. I was 51. God did not forsake me. He welcomed me, as undeserving as I am. He did not see my brokenness. Instead, He saw my potential. My Recovery Journey is one of Faith. From the ashes of my failures, God built a fire in me. A fire that guides each step I take. My journey is yours. My healing can be yours, too. God is a mighty warrior. You can take comfort in the promise that the Lord will fight for you and grant you peace.
