A PRAYER FOR UNITY

Unity has always been hard. Still, Christ calls us to be unified in mind, body, and spirit as we advance His Kingdom on earth.

Nowhere in scripture does God promise that the pursuit of unity won’t be hard. Any more than He promises that battling sin won’t be hard, or that our suffering won’t be costly.

In fact, scripture clearly demonstrates that Christian unity comes at a price. Still, it’s a price worth paying. For at the end of our earthly suffering, we are promised a divine reward—eternal life in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Unity requires much of us. It requires unwavering faith and diligence, trust in God, and perseverance in the midst of our trials.

Unity requires our unwavering faith.

Throughout the Gospels, we bear witness to the cost of unity — of which Christ, Himself, paid the highest price. Jesus was questioned, misunderstood, mocked, and persecuted for His messages of unity, forgiveness, and grace.

His teachings went against the Laws that had governed mankind for millennia. They challenged them. Redefined them. And offered an alternate path. One in which grace overcame works and a New Covenant of forgiveness transcended the Old.

The Old Covenant depended on man.

Moses had led God’s chosen people out of Egypt, where on Mount Sinai, He presented them with the Ten Commandments engraved on stone and written by His own hand. “Obey me, and I will be your God, and you will be My people. Walk in all the ways I command you, that it may go well with you,” Jeremiah 7:23.

The Old Covenant is dependent on man’s obedience to God. As such, it was destined to fail. Why? Because by nature, mankind is sinful and incapable of obeying God. The Old Covenant stands as a reminder of the total futility of our self-efforts.

The New Covenant has nothing to do with man.

The New Covenant has nothing to do with what we do and everything to do with Christ, “For this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins,” Matthew 26:28.

Christ’s sacrifice didn’t destroy the Old Covenant; it surpassed it. In doing so, it reestablished mankind’s unity with God. Jesus paid the price for us. Through Christ, God brings us back into the fold and provides a pathway to salvation that requires nothing more from us than our belief in Jesus, John 3:16.

The Old Covenant was written on tablets of stone. The New Covenant is written on our hearts with unconditional grace and abiding love.

Unity requires trust in God.

Lasting unity stems from a shared trust and reliance on God. Unity isn’t simply agreement; it’s alignment with God’s truth—truth that surpasses the world.

Unity in Christ is a divine calling. It multiplies strength and amplifies faith. It reflects the very nature of God as the Holy Triune, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit on earth. “That all of them may be one, Father, just as You are in Me and I am in You. May they also be in Us so that the world may believe that You have sent Me,” John 17:21.

To cultivate the spirit of unity Christ calls us to, we must choose love, humility, forgiveness, and obedience every day.

Unity requires perseverance.

Unity demands our steadfast effort to overcome differences, pride, and the challenges we face with patience, love, and reliance on God’s strength rather than our own.

Where division weakens the Body of Christ, unity strengthens it. Through steadfast faith, we are emboldened by the Spirit to purposefully continue forward regardless of the hardships we may face. Perserverance wrapped in purpose and faith leads to victory!

May the peace and unity of Christ reign in our hearts this day and forevermore so that we walk steadfastly in faith, persevere in suffering, and choose humility, grace, and love over self all the days of our lives! Amen!

UNIFY our hearts, Lord.

Make one mind of us.

Fill it with Your MERCY,

and Your abiding LOVE.

UNIFY our hearts, LORD.

Grant us STRENGTH to seek,

TRUTH above the world.

Bestow on us Your PEACE.

Turn us from temptation.

Break the bonds of sin.

Fill us with Your SPIRIT.

LIGHT us from within.

UNIFY our hearts, Lord.

HUMBLE us to reach,

for the gift of Your FORGIVENESS,

at the fountain of Your GRACE.

UNIFY our hearts, Lord.

Restore in us Your WORD.

Guide us in Your PRESENCE,

to fulfill Your HOLY WORK.

UNIFY our hearts, Lord.

Let all we say and do,

GLORIFY Your precious NAME,

and reflect our FAITH in You.

AMEN.

I’m JN Fenwick.

Wife, mom, but more importantly, a recovering alcoholic with a grateful heart. For years, I struggled, not just with alcohol, but with an eating disorder and the burdens of guilt and shame. On March 22, 2018, I surrendered my life to Christ. I was 51. God did not forsake me. He welcomed me, as undeserving as I am. He did not see my brokenness. Instead, He saw my potential. My Recovery Journey is one of Faith. From the ashes of my failures, God built a fire in me. A fire that guides each step I take. My journey is yours. My healing can be yours, too. God is a mighty warrior. You can take comfort in the promise that the Lord will fight for you and grant you peace.
