THE MOMENT OF TRUTH

Our moment of truth comes whether we’re ready or not. It doesn’t matter when it comes; what matters is what we do with it when it does.

My moment of truth didn’t come gently. It came as a storm.

Waves slamming into the walls I’d so carefully built. Not content with just breaking them, but shattering them completely.

I stood in the onslaught. Frozen. Unable to look away. To move. Unable to even breathe.

I’d never known such paralyzing anguish. I was laid bare. Every barrier torn. Every cry ripped from my soul.

I had nowhere to go. No safe refuge from the reckoning.

I’d earned this. This moment of truth. Whether I’d wanted it or not, it had come for me. And I was exposed.

I couldn’t put it back in the box. It was too late. I couldn’t unsee the truth. It was right there.

In its reflection, I saw everything. Every wrong choice. Every sin and betrayal. All the excuses and justifications. All the destruction I’d left behind.

Every lie revealed. And it was ugly.

It was a blessing and a curse.

A blessing because I could finally see. A curse because I couldn’t hide. Not anymore.

I wanted to turn and run. There was nowhere to go.

I wanted to unsee. But my eyes were open.

Light had broken through the darkness. From a tiny crack, it poured in. The shadows I hid behind were no match for its fire.

The revelation was complete. The facade burned away. All that was left of me was me.

And I didn’t know her.

Though she’d always been there.

Behind the mask. Beneath all the layers used to condemn and justify.

I wanted to know her. I knew if I wanted to be free, I had to let her out. Give her space to breathe.

She was the light.

The pull on my soul that wouldn’t let go. Without her, the darkness would win.

Standing in the wreckage of all I’d been, she gazed back at me, ready and willing.

My moment of truth had finally come.

In the silence, I prayed for the strength to let go. To stop running. To relinquish control.

I’d done it my way for so long. It was time to surrender. To choose a different path. A path unknown to me, but offered just the same.

My moment of truth exposed it all.

And though I was afraid, though I knew everything had changed, the choice was still mine.

That if I chose wrong now, I would be lost forever.

The light within me, as fragile as it was, offered the one thing I needed. Hope. A tiny seed. But it was enough.

I clung to it and stepped out of the wreckage. Left the destruction of everything I thought I was behind.

For the first time in my life, I let the light lead. Allowed faith to guide me.

My moment of truth tore down every wall. Every barrier. What was left was not the nothing I feared. It was the beginning I didn’t deserve, but reached for anyway.

It was redemption, salvation, healing, and deliverance. I reached for it with both hands and held on tight.

I’ve never let go.

I’m grateful for that moment.

And for every trial that led me to it. For every wrong turn that brought me to the crossroads. Every slammed window that exposed the open door. For every crack that allowed the light to come pouring in.

They pulled me kicking and screaming, broken and bleeding, into that moment. My moment of truth.

Without them, I wouldn’t be here now to share this one.

This moment is more than a yearning. It’s a cry from my soul for every soul still lost.

A prayer for every soul still building walls instead of letting them crumble into dust.

Holding onto lies instead of seeking the truth.

Longing for freedom but too afraid to relinquish control.

Shoring up the cracks instead of allowing them to splinter.

Let the walls crumble.

Let the lies fall.

Relinquish control.

The door is open.

Let your moment of truth come.

Let everything you think you are shatter.

So the Light can get in.

And Truth can set you free.

Amen.

I’m JN Fenwick.

Wife, mom, but more importantly, a recovering alcoholic with a grateful heart. For years, I struggled, not just with alcohol, but with an eating disorder and the burdens of guilt and shame. On March 22, 2018, I surrendered my life to Christ. I was 51. God did not forsake me. He welcomed me, as undeserving as I am. He did not see my brokenness. Instead, He saw my potential. My Recovery Journey is one of Faith. From the ashes of my failures, God built a fire in me. A fire that guides each step I take. My journey is yours. My healing can be yours, too. God is a mighty warrior. You can take comfort in the promise that the Lord will fight for you and grant you peace. | Exodus 14:14.
