Jesus displayed humble obedience to His Father’s will through His earthly ministry, even when it meant giving His life.
In the Old Testament, God made a covenant with the people of Israel through Moses. He sent Jesus, His only Son, to establish a New Covenant through His death and resurrection. Jesus shed His blood on the cross to lay the foundation for the New Covenant. A Covenant based on grace, forgiveness, and salvation for all who believe in Him. In remembrance of Christ’s sacrifice this Holy Thursday, we reflect on His selfless act of love.
Jesus fully submitted to God.
Jesus had full clarity as to the agony He would face. Yet, despite this knowledge, He stayed the course. He didn’t waver or run; rather, He remained. He was willing to undergo the horrors because He loves us. Loves us so much that He was willing to take on the curse of sin for us. It was His love for His Father that made Him obedient to God’s will. Obedient even unto death. He made peace with God’s plan for our salvation and, in doing so, was able to fulfill God’s purpose for His life.
Jesus paid the price for our redemption.
Jesus’s blood was shed as payment for the atonement of humanity’s wrongdoing. His sacrifice is not just for a select few, but for all. It’s through Christ’s death that we are reconciled to God and that we receive forgiveness for our sins.
The New Covenant Jesus established is the ultimate expression of love.
In John 13:1, we are given a glimpse of Christ’s love for His disciples: “Having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.” Jesus knew that Judas would betray Him, that Peter would deny Him, and that His disciples would turn from Him in fear. Still, He loved them. He gathered with them to share a meal and to prepare them for what was to come. During the evening, He demonstrated the depth of His love by taking on the role of servant and washing their feet. He humbled Himself so they would know humility.
This simple act of selflessness was but a precursor to the greater sacrifice Jesus would make for us all. He not only commanded us to “Love one another as I have loved you” (John 13:34), but He also showed us exactly what that means. Christ’s love is characterized by selflessness, sacrifice, and genuine care. That’s the kind of love He calls us to show one another. Each day is an opportunity to illustrate our love for Jesus by loving as He loves. In remembrance and gratitude for His sacrifice on our behalf, we can die to ourselves in service to Him and others.
Do this in Remembrance of Me.
The Last Supper is the final meal that Jesus shares with His disciples before His crucifixion. It’s also the first Holy Communion, where Jesus offers bread and wine as symbols for His body and blood and the sacrifice He would make. Each time we celebrate the Eucharist, we are fulfilling His instruction to “Do this in remembrance of Me“ (1 Corinthians 11:23-26).
Holy Communion is a gift that reminds us of God’s grace and love, and the forgiveness Jesus secured for us. The shedding of Jesus’s blood on the cross is the most powerful act of selfless love we’ll ever know. It’s the foundation for the New Covenant and the price paid for our salvation. When we eat the bread and drink the wine, we are participating in the grace, forgiveness, and love of the New Covenant.
IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME
On the night He was betrayed,
Our Savior took the cup,
“This is my blood,
poured out for you in love.”
Then, He took the bread,
and shared what He had broken,
“This is my body,
laid down for salvation.”
“Do both these things,
in memory of Me,
and this gift of Love I give,
to all humanity.”
To free you from the bondage,
of sin and separation,
to return you to the Father,
and the fullness of creation.
To fulfill My Father’s plan,
I make this sacrifice,
so that all who walk in darkness,
may be born into New Life.
All that is to come,
the Father has ordained.
All that I must do,
is done willingly in His Name.
Do not be afraid,
for this is why He sent me,
I am the Way, the Truth, the Life,
The fulfillment of His Mercy.
For God so loved the world,
He sent Me to take your place,
to conquer sin and death,
to sanctify you in His Grace.

“The debt for sin has been erased,
for all who would believe.”
