Turning to God in times of need requires humility, obedience, and faith. Faith is believing that God is the answer to every question, every need, and every desire of our hearts. His covenant love is eternal. His word will never fail.
We have been converted to the Lord. Our lives are precious and have meaning. But, that does not mean we are absolved from suffering in this life. Jesus, Himself, suffered in this life. He suffered and died for us. The eternal Son of God became the perfect Son of Man to fulfill God’s eternal covenant of love with all mankind. Christ’s blood is the blood of the covenant poured out for the forgiveness of sins.
Through Him, we are saved by grace through faith, Ephesians 2:8. This is not our doing, but a gift of the Holy Spirit. As Christians, we are called to go out to the world and share the good news.
“Listen, Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. You are to love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength. Let these words that I’m commanding you today be always on your heart. Teach them repeatedly to your children. Talk about them while sitting in your house or walking on the road, and as you lie down or get up. Tie them as reminders on your forearm, bind them on your forehead, and write them on the door frames of your house and on your gates.”
Deuteronmy 6: 4-9
God has given humanity a precious gift.
That gift is salvation. Salvation of the heart, mind, body, and soul. Procured for us through the shedding of Christ’s blood and His glorious resurrection.
The covenant love of God is the reason and the foundation of all creation. We are created in the image of God. His spirit dwells within us. God’s covenant love is unconditional. It is based on His commitment to us, His children. God will always love, care for, and protect us. Even when we fall astray. That is His promise. It is eternal. God’s word will never fail.
The world will fail us. We will fail each other. And yes, we will fail God. But He will never abandon us. Exodus 14:14 assures us that God will always fight for us. Even to the moment of our last breath, He stands waiting.
God’s covenant love is certain, but it requires our obedience.
Love requires devotion. Covenant love requires total self-giving. Christ Jesus exemplifies the eternal covenant love of God. “Greater love has no one than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends,” John 15:13.
Christ was made an offering for sin. The sins of the entire world. He willingly went to the cross, obedient to His Father, for you and me; for us all. The night He was betrayed, He gave His disciples a new commandment, “Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another,” John 13:34.
We cannot hope to ever love as Christ loves. But we are to try. By trusting that Jesus dwells within us. That as God’s creation, His Holy Spirit also fills us. Through obedience to His commandments, adherence to His Holy Word, and submission to His will for our lives, we emulate the eternal covenant love of God.
Our duty as Christians, as believers, and as children of God is that we emulate the eternal covenant love of God in all we think and say and do.

Emulating the eternal covenant love of God.
We are called to love as Christ loved so that in ourselves we become nothing. In other words, we must die to ourselves so that Christ may be seen in us.
Dying to self does not mean thinking less of ourselves, it means thinking of ourselves less. It requires forgoing the selfish, physical, and egotistical desires of this world and wholeheartedly seeking the kingdom of God. It also requires us to remain humble, obedient, and faithful. Throughout His earthly life, Jesus exemplified all of these so that we might understand what they truly mean. More importantly, how to apply them in our daily lives.
Humble
Webster defines humility as, freedom from pride or arrogance. Nowhere in Scripture is humility more evident than in Jesus Christ. The Son of God became poor so that we might become rich. Through meekness and compassion, rather than power and might, Christ was GIVEN by the Father as a sacrifice for the salvation of humanity. Thus, to save humanity, Christ humbled Himself before humanity.
As Christians, we are called to emulate Jesus. To humble ourselves before God. To put others ahead of ourselves. Through humility, we acknowledge God as Lord and are obedient to His will.
Obedient
Jesus trusted His Father and obeyed Him in everything He did, becoming “obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross,” Philippians 2:8. Every step, every day, Jesus chose to obey God and not men. He chose to bend His life to the Father’s will. More importantly, He learned obedience through suffering. He learned in hard times to stand firm and trust the Father. Jesus showed us every minute of His earthly life and ministry that obedience to God leads to eternal life.
Jesus is the perfect example of how to love God and obey Him completely. That’s why He calls us to follow Him and to obey Him with all our hearts — especially in times of suffering when our faith is tested and our strength is waning. It is through suffering that we learn humility, through humility that we choose obedience, and through obedience that we remain faithful.
Faithful
Jesus’ relationship with His Father was the foundation of His life, “I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me,” John 5:30.
Jesus set aside His own will to carry out the will of the Father. He remained faithful to God in all things. When others did not accept Him, He remained faithful. When the world condemned Him, He remained faithful. Jesus’ life is a testimony of how God calls us to live — Christ set aside His own will to carry out the will of the Father.
It is through faith that we acknowledge our dependence on God. Through faith, we willingly follow His commands and teachings as expressed in the Bible. Our faithfulness demonstrates our unwavering trust and loyalty to God in all situations. Faith calls us to put God’s will above our own and recognize our limitations in comparison to His power. That is why faith is the cornerstone.
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.
Isaiah 28:16
When we trust in the cornerstone that God has laid we will not be hurried or panicked in times of trouble. Rather, we can rest in the confidence of God’s unfailing protection and guidance. Turning to God in times of need is faith. Faith is believing that God is the answer to every question, every need, and every desire of our hearts. His covenant love is eternal. His word will never fail.

My Prayer
Dear Lord, thank You for Your eternal covenant love. For the gift of salvation purchased for me through the blood of Your precious Son. Thank You for Your unfailing Word. Plant in me a humble, obedient, and faithful heart. Anchor my faith in the sure foundation of Your promises. For in You and You alone do I find unwavering security and hope. Help me to emulate Your eternal covenant love, dying to myself that I may serve You in all I think and say and do all the days of my life. Amen.
