GOD’S WORD IS TRUTH

Understanding God’s Word requires patience, diligence, and above all Truth. Psalm 119 celebrates the Holy Word of God.

Our approach to God’s Word cannot be casual. The goal of studying scripture is not to raise us to loftiness in the eyes of the world. Rather, it’s to please God. For God’s Word is a lamp to our feet (Psalm 119:105).

Psalm 119 Celebrates God’s Word

Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible for a reason. God’s Word is multifaceted, filled with promise and instruction. Which is why the 176 verses that comprise Psalm 119 emphasize faithful study (Psalm 119:130), meditation (Psalm 119:15), and most of all obedience (Psalm 119:5). Psalm 119 assures believers that God’s Word is our supreme guide and our greatest source of wisdom. Verses 1-8 tell us that a blessed life comes from following the Word of God, while verse 9 tells us how to remain pure in both thought and deed.

God’s Word is a Blessed Treasure

One of the most beautiful underlying themes of Psalm 119 is the psalmist’s love for God and devotion to His Word. The psalmist understands his human frailties and therefore relies wholly on God for instruction and for the strength to obey His Word. Throughout the Psalm, the psalmist refers to himself as a servant, reminding us that when we approach God’s Word with humility and faithfulness, we are honoring Him.

Psalm 119 reminds us that God’s Word is a precious treasure and that adhering to it is our greatest task. It encourages us toward obedience while reminding us that we need God’s help and guidance to fulfill our responsibility.

Obeying the Word of God is a Holy Walk of Faith

Psalm 119 presents obedience as a joyful, willing, and devoted response to God’s Word rather than as a burden to be carried. The psalmist praises God’s Word and describes obedience as a “desire of the heart.” He writes of not just obeying God’s laws, but keeping, following, and hiding them in his heart.

God sees into our hearts, so that is where His Word must dwell. Obedience to God must direct our path in times of joy and fruitfulness, not just in times of opposition or hardship. Our obedience to God’s Word increases our understanding of it and our commitment to it. Obedience is our response to God’s mercy and unfailing grace—our recognition that His Word is good, righteous, and true.

These are themes Charles Spurgeon discusses in his work, The Golden Alphabet: A Devotional Commentary on Psalm 119. Written in 1887, it is a verse-by-verse devotional that celebrates the beauty, power, and necessity of God’s Word.

I do not believe that any subject other than a heavenly one would have allowed of such a psalm being written upon it; for the themes of this world are narrow and shallow. Neither could such a handling have been given even to a sacred subject by any mind less than divine; inspiration alone can account for the fullness and freshness of this psalm.

My Prayer

LORD, may Your Word be a lamp to my feet and a light on my path. Fill me with Your eternal Word, LORD, so that my desire to obey You surpasses all others. Humble me, LORD, to seek Your will. Teach me Your Word and instruct me in its purpose. Grant me wisdom to understand and courage to follow through. Help me to hide Your Word in my heart, to keep Your Commandments, and to follow where You lead me this day and forevermore. AMEN.

Your Word is Truth, LORD,

spoken to our hearts.

In You we find our Purpose,

and the strength we need to start,

our journey to Salvation,

guided by Your hand.

You see into our souls, Lord,

and grant us Grace to understand,

that all things great and small,

are symbols of Your Love.

You lead us, LORD, with patience,

and guide us from above.

Nothing can separate us

from the Presence of Your Spirit.

You temper us with Mercy, LORD.

Command Your Angels

to stay near us.

You lift us from the darkness

of this lost and broken world

and guide us to the safety

of Your Sacred, Holy Word. 

Your Word is Truth, LORD,

that surpasses understanding.

In You, we find our footing.

You meet us where we’re standing.

Help us to seek our Purpose, LORD,

in the Power of Your Name. 

To come before You willingly,

without regret or shame.

To seek Your Truth relentlessly,

to surrender to Your Will.

Knowing that where You abide,

is where our souls are filled,

with Grace that’s everlasting,

and Faith that conquers fear.

For You are God Almighty,

Your Truth is welcome here.
