John the Baptist dedicated his life to preparing the way for the One who’d bring the world salvation.
Luke Chapter 1 tells the story of John the Baptist’s miraculous birth to Elizabeth and Zachariah and his calling to prepare the way for the Lord.
Elizabeth gave birth to a son whom she named John in obedience to God’s divine will. Thinking they’d name him after his father, as was custom, their neighbors were mystified.
When the angel Gabriel appeared to Zechariah, telling him that he and Elizabeth would have a son, Zechariah questioned the promise, pointing out their old age. Because of his lack of faith, Gabriel rendered him mute until the prophecy was fulfilled.
While we might feel sorry for Zachariah’s predicament, how many of us could say that we wouldn’t have asked the same question? That we wouldn’t have responded like Zachariah with, “How is this possible?” rather than like Mary with, “How will this happen?” One response reveals doubt, the other faith.
When Zachariah’s faith was tested, he failed.
However, like all of us, Zachariah was allowed to demonstrate his faith and obedience anew, despite his previous doubt.
Scripture reveals that Zachariah’s speech was returned, exactly as Gabriel had said it would be. As soon as Zachariah wrote down that his newborn son’s name would be John, his mouth was opened, and he immediately praised God.
Naming the baby “John” (which translates to “The Lord is gracious”) demonstrates complete obedience to the instruction Gabriel gave them. Elizabeth and Zachariah’s obedience was an act of faith that overrode family custom to align with God’s designated purpose for their son.
John’s birth was a miracle, and part of God’s plan for our salvation. Despite their advanced age, God chose Elizabeth and Zachariah to be John’s parents.
God chose John to prepare the way for His Son and to baptize the Savior.
A voice calling in the wilderness: “Prepare the way.”
Like so many of Isaiah’s prophesies foretelling the coming of the Messiah, verse 40:3 foretells John’s mission of calling people to repentance and baptizing them in preparation for the coming of Jesus Christ.
A voice of one calling in the wilderness, “Prepare the way for the LORD; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.” — Isaiah 40:3
John’s ministry took place in the literal desert of Judea — in the wilderness.
The words “Prepare the way” refer to the ancient custom of kings sending their heralds ahead to pave roads and clear pathways to ensure a smooth journey.
John called people to repent and be baptized in preparation for the arrival of the Messiah, the King of Kings.
He “made straight the desert highway” by removing spiritual obstacles to prepare hearts to recognize and accept Jesus.
Throughout his entire ministry, John pointed to the Messiah, the One who was to come, “He must increase, but I must decrease,” John 3:30.
John’s words are a reminder that our primary purpose as Christians is to point to Christ and to further His kingdom, not to elevate ourselves.
My Prayer
LORD, may we follow John’s example, allowing You to take center stage in our lives and surrendering any desires we may have for recognition and acclaim. May our reliance on self decrease and our faith and trust in You increase. We ask You to send Your Holy Spirit to guide and strengthen us so that we point the way to You with all that we think and say and do. May we approach the throne of grace with humility, selflessness, and faith all the days of our lives. And may Your light shine through us so that everyone we meet knows You are God forever and ever, Amen.
Prepare the Way
His birth itself was a miracle,
Elizabeth knew this to be true.
For when she first beheld him,
She praised the Lord anew.
“His name is John,” she stated,
and Zachariah wrote the same,
for he had been without a voice,
until that very day.
They followed God’s instructions,
fulfilled His greater plan.
They knew their son was destined,
for a purpose bigger than,
any they’d imagine.
They trusted in the LORD,
and raised him up to bear the fruit,
God planted with His Word.
John then grew in faithfulness,
and carried strength within,
the depths of his own willing heart,
to prepare the way for Him.
“I’m not the One you imagine,”
He told those who spoke his name,
“There’s One who’s coming after me,
much greater than I am.”
The day drew near when Jesus,
would come to stand beside,
this man whom God had chosen,
to herald and baptize,
the One whom God had promised,
before the dawning of creation,
to sacrifice His very life,
to bring the world salvation.
John prepared the way,
for the Messiah God had sent,
beseeching all who heard his voice,
to be baptized and repent.
“This message of salvation
is meant for everyone
who hears my voice and then believes,
This man is God’s own Son.”
