THE NIGHT LOVE CAME DOWN

The night was cold. The kind of cold that seeps into bone to be expelled in clouded breaths on frigid air.

The trip had been slow. A weary donkey carrying a young woman heavy with child. She sat huddled against the cold, her husband walking steadfastly beside her. Where he led, the donkey slowly followed.

They entered the crowded little town. So many bodies filled the streets, seeking shelter from the cold. They were turned away. There was no room. He found a stable. It would have to do.

He prepared a resting place with the musty straw as a few oxen and sheep looked on. Then, carefully, he settled his wife in the bed of hay. Her time was near.

He could hear her labored breaths and see the tightening of her hands around her heaving stomach. He held her hand and prayed.

She labored. Quietly moaning her pain into the night and squeezing his hand for comfort and assurance.

Then he heard it. The first cry. The one that changed everything.

She wrapped him in the rags she’d packed. Held him close to her breast and smiled.

He was here. The One promised. The One the angel had told her she would bear. Born of the Spirit, both human and divine.

She laid him in the feeding trough filled with straw. They gazed at him in wonder—pure love wrapped in pure light residing in a tiny, perfect form.

In a nearby field, shepherds huddled against the cold. Standing guard over their sheep, they gazed out into the darkness.

Then the darkness was broken.

By a light brighter than any they’d ever seen. And they shrank away. Until a voice as vast as Heaven itself assured them they had nothing to fear.

The message wasn’t one they’d expected. It was one they’d longed for, waited for, but not one they’d anticipated as they’d set out that night.

Then, Heaven opened wide. The sound of a thousand voices sang glory into the darkness.

A song that echoed through the stillness, reaching down and settling into weary hearts, now filled with hope.

Hope they carried with them as they ran from that place to see him. The One they’d prayed for. The One the prophets had spoken of—the Messiah.

They found the stable. Stood at the threshold of glory. Gazed at the tiny form that would one day redeem mankind with his final breath.

Everything that had ever been and all that was yet to be resided in the tiny babe. The One who spoke the universe into being, who hung the stars in the heavens, now slept in a manger.

Holiness filled that place.

A holiness so pure, so vast, it covered them. Creation breathed as Heaven looked on.

The night was holy. It was the night God entered His creation, the night love came down. A love so pure it would bear the weight of the world’s sin. A light so pure it would shatter the darkness forever.

The shepherds ran from that place. Sharing the good news with a sleeping world.

The Night Love Came Down

Lord, fill our hearts,

with HOPE this Season.

Remind us that You’re

the GIFT and the reason,

we celebrate Christmas,

and the JOY that it brings,

the coming of our SAVIOR,

and the birth of our KING.

Fill our hearts with TRUTH,

as we gather together,

that You’re our REFUGE,

and PORTION forever.

May we carry the GOOD NEWS,

to a world lost and sleeping,

that You came to SAVE,

and return to Your keeping,

every lost soul,

every heart undeserving,

from the bondage of sin,

that makes us unworthy,

of Your merciful GRACE,

that washes us clean,

of Your unfailing LOVE,

that fills us with PEACE.

Fill us with Your PRESENCE,

as we wake Christmas morn,

to celebrate the GLORY,

of the night LOVE came down.

Amen.

I’m JN Fenwick.

Wife, mom, but more importantly, a recovering alcoholic with a grateful heart. For years, I struggled, not just with alcohol, but with an eating disorder and the burdens of guilt and shame. On March 22, 2018, I surrendered my life to Christ. I was 51. God did not forsake me. He welcomed me, as undeserving as I am. He did not see my brokenness. Instead, He saw my potential. My Recovery Journey is one of Faith. From the ashes of my failures, God built a fire in me. A fire that guides each step I take. My journey is yours. My healing can be yours, too. God is a mighty warrior. You can take comfort in the promise that the Lord will fight for you and grant you peace.
