WALK AS CHILDREN OF THE LIGHT

Ephesians 5:8 functions as a hinge that looks back to who we were and forward to who we must become.

Ephesians 5:8 declares, “For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the LORD: walk as children of light.” With his words, Paul reminds us of who we were and of who we become as believers. In Christ, we become children of the light. Then, he instructs us on how we must live if we truly believe.

With his opening words, Paul reminds us that sin placed us in darkness that separated us from God. Darkness of mind, heart, and being. Like Adam and Eve, who immediately hid from God after disobeying Him, we hide in the darkness because our sinful natures cannot endure exposure.

Sin exists in darkness.

That’s why God sent the Light into the world.

With his next words, Paul reminds us of our true identity: “But now ye are light in the Lord.”

Christ’s death and resurrection transformed us from one moral and spiritual reality to another. The change is not simply a change of setting, from darkness to light, but a change of what we’re made to be in the LORD. Our new reality exists only in Him: “we are saved by grace through faith” (Ephesians 2:8), not by our own moral improvement or self-repair.

Salvation rests in Christ alone.

John 8:12 proclaims, “Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”

Christ’s words convey not just what He does, but who He IS: The light of the world.

This statement carries identity and authority.

Jesus is not merely one lamp among many; He is the light of the world. His light transcends all other light. Its illumination is wide enough to encompass every generation and all of humanity.

We are children of the light.

Through Christ, our identity is transformed. Where once we were darkness, now we are light in the LORD.

Because our identity has changed, so too must the way we live change.

First, we must reject darkness. That means turning from sin and abandoning our old lives completely. Then, we must expose darkness by living a Christ-like life. A life that reflects the grace, mercy, and love God has given us.

A life that produces the “fruit of the light.” Fruit that yields goodness, righteousness, and truth.

A life of surrender and obedience that leads others into the Light of Christ.

Into the darkness of a lost world, the Light came.

Not as a king bearing a crown of gold, but as a servant who’d bear the sins of all mankind.

Jesus Christ is the living revelation of God’s divine Light in the world.

Light announced His birth as a brilliant star in the heavens above Bethlehem.

Light descended upon Him at His baptism, surrounded Him at His transfiguration, and radiated from Him after His resurrection.

When Light shines, darkness flees.

Without the Light of Christ, we stumble in the darkness, blind to our true condition.

Christ’s Light exposes sin so it can be forgiven and reveals truth so it can be known.

When we walk as children of the Light, we walk in Light that never dims because we walk in the Truth that came to save.

The darkness that surrounded me,

was bitter and complete.

The chains that held me bound,

prevented my release.

The shame I carried with me,

told me I was lost,

that I was unworthy of

the Grace I needed most.

I believed the lies shame fed me,

in the valley of defeat,

where I wandered in my brokenness,

powerless and weak.

The Light I yearned to enter,

seemed so far away,

still it beckoned me to come,

to reach it anyway.

It was the Light that saved me,

for my eyes could not unsee

the beauty of the garden,

where I longed to be.

I stood upon the threshold,

uncertain and unsure,

that I would be found worthy,

to enter through the door.

Salvation came to meet me,

to welcome me inside,

offering the freedom

that shame had tried to hide.

Forgiveness overflowing,

met me as I was,

the Light of Life transforming,

all that I’d become.

The moment I crossed over,

the Light entered me,

breaking every chain until

His Mercy set me free.
