BY THE GRACE OF GOD

Spiritual grace is more than simple elegance or refinement. Spiritual grace is the basis of faith. As Christians, we are saved by faith through grace.

The world’s definition of grace is “simple elegance and refinement in stature and movement.” Ballerinas are graceful, as are swans. Falling snow is graceful, as are flocks of birds soaring through the sky. Grace doesn’t conjure images of power or might. It brings to mind gentleness and softness.

Spiritual grace, however, IS powerful. Its might is life-changing and enduring.

Spiritual grace is an undeserved gift.

We are all sinners. Yet, we are all given the same opportunity to receive grace.

Spiritual grace is the unconditional love of God shown to the unlovely, the peace of God given to the restless, the favor of God bestowed on the unworthy.

Spiritual grace is most clearly revealed through God’s Word and embodied in His Son, Jesus Christ.

Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through Him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God,” Romans | 5:1-2

Spiritual grace bestows a myriad of blessings.

Being saved by faith through grace grants us, as believers, access to divine blessings. Divine, because they come from God. Blessings, because they transform us and guide us to the fullness of life only found in Jesus Christ.

Through spiritual grace, we are justified.

As sinners, we are at enmity with God and are therefore separated from Him.

As Paul explains throughout Romans, sin separates us from God. “For the wages of sin is death,” Romans | 6:23. Not just death in the flesh, but eternal death. Eternal separation from God.

Paul does not leave us without hope, though. For the rest of Romans | 6:23 assures us, “but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Through God’s grace and the sacrifice of His Son, we are granted the gift of salvation. Through Christ’s suffering, death, and resurrection, we are made right with God. We are justified. Thus, instead of being eternally separated from God by sin, we have been placed in eternal union with Him through our faith in Christ.

Christ is the key, and believing in Him is what we are called to do.

It is Christ and Christ alone who saves. It is our faith in Him that justifies. “Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved,” Romans | 10:9.

Through spiritual grace, we are made righteous.

God is the ultimate lawgiver. To be righteous in the eyes of God, we must be right in character, attitude, action, and word.

We cannot attain righteousness on our own. Nor can we achieve it through our own actions or good works. Righteousness is not about our achievements; it is a gift from God, secured for us through Christ.

When Jesus died on the cross, He bore all the sins of humanity for us. As a result, everyone who believes in Him is made righteous with God.

John | 3:14-15 tells us, “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.”

Through the spiritual grace granted to us by God through His Son, we are reconciled with God and made righteous in His eyes.

All we are called to do is believe. And as believers, to live lives pleasing to Him.

Through spiritual grace, we have peace with God.

When we accept Christ as our Savior, we accept the gift of salvation through the shed blood of Christ. We are at peace with God from the moment of salvation and continue to be so for the rest of our lives.

However, like many states in this life, peace isn’t permanent. To remain in the perfect peace of God, we must actively walk in the Spirit and place our trust in Him, moment by moment.

In Philippians, Paul explains how to not only experience, but to remain in the peace of God: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus,” Philippians | 4:6-7.

To be saved by faith through grace means to be justified, made righteous, and to be at peace with God.

Through the sacrifice of our Savior, we are saved. That is grace. Spiritual, unconditional, and enduring grace. What a beautiful gift bestowed upon humanity, as undeserving as we are.

Prayer for Grace: Lord, though I am a sinner and undeserving of Your grace, you grant it anyway. Though I often stumble, You wait patiently with open arms to lift me. Though fear often overwhelms me, You comfort me and give me peace. Thank You, Lord, for Your unending grace, for bearing my sins so that I might be reconciled with God and made righteous in His eyes. Thank You for this gift of spiritual grace that brings me perfect peace and draws me closer to You. Guide my steps, Lord, so that my character, my attitude, my actions, and my words bring glory and honor to Your holy name. Amen.
