One Year Later

It’s been one year.

One year since that day.

That day we’ll never forget.

Our world was destroyed.

Torn from its foundation.

Inexplicably altered.

We emerged to an apocalypse.

So complete in its devastation,

we immediately understood,

we’d never be the same.

Its been one year.

One year since that day.

That day that challenged us.

In ways we never imagined.

Our strength increased that day.

Bolstered by our inexhaustible faith.

We knew the road ahead would be daunting.

That the work would be relentless.

Still, we rolled up our sleeves.

Reached out a hand to our neighbors.

Lifted those who could not lift themselves.

Smiled through our tears.

Moved, though our limbs were heavy.

Refused to give in to the pain.

It’s been one year.

One year since that day.

That day we had to dig deep.

Refusing to let this define us.

Accepting all these new scars.

Coming together in hope,

and with an unfaltering spirit.

It was always up to us.

How we would recover.

How we would rebuild.

How we would move forward.

We had survived the storm.

Not knowing in that moment,

the much harder work lay ahead.

That bits and pieces of our shattered lives,

would give way to a new foundation.

A foundation we would slowly build.

A future we would slowly reclaim.

A determination that would not fail us.

A compassion that would sustain us.

And a hope we’d never relinquish.
