Goodbye in the Aftermath

Downtown Marianna, FL following Hurricane Michael on October 10, 2018. The entire Florida Panhandle suffered catastrophic damage with property losses to date at a staggering $5 billion and growing.

In the aftermath we said goodbye
To so many things
The trees
Our homes
Our landmarks
Our cities
We grieved for these losses
For ourselves
For each other
For our shattered lives
We promised to rebuild
To have faith
To believe
To hope
But the goodbyes,
The goodbyes would remain
How could they not?
When everywhere we looked
The goodbyes changed us forever
The goodbyes would always remain
Part of us, present and so very real
In the aftermath of the storm
We cried
We prayed
We struggled
We yearned
For the day we could breathe again
For the moment we’d finally begin to heal.
